We’ll close this chapter with the story of one missional community (in this church they are called GoCommunities, or GoCos for short) with an amazing vision. It was birthed out of the experience of one woman who walked alongside a number of family members who fought cancer. Out of her tenacity and refusal to give the last word to the enemy, the group was born.

There’s just something about cancer that bonds people for life. It doesn’t matter what kind of cancer or what the outcome. We all have stories. We have wounds and scars. We have wins. We have losses. Above all, together, we find incredible hope and strength.

The Cancer Warriors GoCo is a group who are passionate about serving and encouraging cancer patients and their families. We’ve all had experience battling all types of cancer, either personally or alongside our own close family members and friends. We know firsthand the spiritual, emotional, and physical battle that takes place when facing cancer and it’s a time in your life when you run either toward or away from God. Cancer Warriors GoCo is ready and willing to serve in Jesus’ name just as we were served, and to give back to others like so many who stood by and supported us during each of our cancer stories.

Our group meets twice a month and we usually serve together as a large group at least one other time a month. We are happy to serve as needed to take care of people’s practical needs and love to develop relationships with patients and their families. We serve both as a large group and individually, as we aim to use our own gifts and passions in serving others. We have people who can help drive patients to their appointments through the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. We have people in the group who are talented hairstylists willing to help patients with wigs. We have a photographer who has a passion to serve by capturing on film the stories of families and individuals we serve. The list goes on! It’s a win-win anytime we can use our God-given gifts and talents for the benefit of the patients and families we feel called to serve.

We also pray for those with cancer, for Jesus’ healing, and also for their family and friends. Sometimes that involves walking with people to the end of their lives, but we want to see more and more people healed and set free!

As a large group, together we can help individuals with anything from cards and visits to household needs and meals. We also love connecting with other GoCos to help serve! Leveraging other GoCos to help just multiplies the practical value and the kingdom impact that can be made.

GETTING STARTED

1. (For church leaders:) With your key leaders, think through how you can wisely release the first generation of missional community leaders. Brainstorm what you don’t know how to do—and who you can learn from in order to maximize your fruitfulness.
